What’s the history of The Mountain Outfitters?

The Mountain Outfitters first opened in Sewanee, Tennessee when Marjorie and David came to Sewanee from Chattanooga in 1994. Over the course of nearly 17 years The Mountain Outfitters has grown from a hole-in-the-wall outfitting store to a full-scale outdoor equipment and apparel supplier, one of the largest and most successful in the area! In 2008 Mountain Outfitters moved to a new building in Monteagle, TN. With over 8,000 sq. feet of sales floors on two levels we’re able to keep a very well-stocked inventory! We’d love to have you in the store if you’re passing through Tennessee!

Where is The Mountain Outfitters located?

The Mountain Outfitters is located at 903 West Main St., Monteagle, TN 37356. We’re at exit 134 off of Interstate 24 on the Cumberland Plateau between Chattanooga and Nashville. Take the Monteagle/Sewanee exit and drive South, you’ll immediately see our building!

Can The Mountain Outfitters supply me with information about camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities in Tennessee?

Absolutely! We sell several books on the subject of outdoor activities (hiking, camping, climbing, etc.) in Tennessee and we have a very well-stocked collection of brochures and fliers for various outdoor groups in the area. Armed with maps, guides, directions, and occasionally GPS coordinates our staff is extremely knowledgeable about the outdoor world of Tennessee and of the entire region!

What if my size or color is not available?

 If your preferred color or your size is not available in an item that you’re interested in then The Mountain Outfitters would like to make every effort to special order the item for you. Often times we will be able to get the item and ship it to you with very little delay. Occasionally, however, our suppliers will also be out of the color or size you need in which case The Mountain Outfitters will, regrettably, be unable to help you. In the event that our inventories are not entirely accurate (this happens very rarely) and you are charged at the website checkout for an item which we then come to find we do not, in fact, have in our inventory then your card will be promptly refunded for the full amount it was charged and we will contact you to apologize and see what we can do to resolve the issue.

We are always happy to investigate the possibility and the logistics of special ordering any item for our customers. Often times we will be able to promptly get the item in from our suppliers. There is no guarantee, however, that the item you’re seeking will be available to us. Do all clothing brands fit the same?

Absolutely not. Some companies (such as Carhartt and Woolrich) are sized larger while others (such as Arc’Teryx and Patagonia) are sized more athletically. If you’re unfamiliar with how a particular brand’s garment might fit you call us at (931) 924-4100 and our expert staff will do everything possible in assisting you. Sizing charts for each brand are often available at the dealer's website.

Do all shoe brands fit the same?

Absolutely not. If you are unfamiliar with a brand’s sizing and how it relates to your foot or if you’ve never had the chance to physically try on shoes you’re buying off our website then make sure you’re familiar with our return policy before purchasing. Vibram Five Fingers are measured in European sizes (e.g. 39, 40, 41, etc.). They are extremely precise in their fit and it The Mountain Outfitters highly recommends being certain of your “Vibram size” before placing an order for Five Fingers.
